Sunday, July 31 is Logan Lake Day! All activities take place at Maggs Park and Recreation Centre.

Western Canada Summer Games Triathlon

The 2011 Western Canada Summer Games are coming to Lac Le Jeune! The Triathlon will be hosted on the Lac Le Jeune Resort property.

There will be a temporary delays on Lac Le Jeune Park Drive East and Lac Le Juene Road for the Western Canada Summer Games.

Traffic delays will occur during these dates:
August 5 - no delays but please use caution as participants are practicing
August 6 – 10:40am – 11:20am and 12:10pm – 12 45pm
August 7 - no delays but please use caution as participants are practicing
August 8 - 9:50am – 11:20am and 11:50am – 1:10pm
August 9 – 10:20am – 10:40am and 11:20am – 11:40am

Traffic will be stopped to allow race participants to cycle in a racing peleton safely.

We ask that you plan your schedules as to not conflict with the closures. Please use caution when driving in the vicinity of this event and obey all traffic control devices and traffic control people.

The Western Canada Summers Games and the Ministry of Transportation appreciates your cooperation. For more information on the event please contact, the Western Canada Summer Games office at 250-372-1157.

The event is still in need of volunteers. If you are able to lend your time, please register as a volunteer with the Games office or sign up online and select Triathlon as your sport of choice.

Looking forward to summer . . .

Recently, a friend who visited Lac Le Jeune in the summer of 2009 came across a poem in her journal that she was inspired to write while relaxing on our front porch. I think it captures the feel of summer at Lac Le Jeune.

Primary Things, Plus

yellow, red, blue, green
primary colors, plus
beside Lac Le Jeune
boats in bright colors
line up in a downward row

earlier we floated the boats
out on the water
I wore spiral earings
that caught in the web
of the life jacket
some in our party
were caught in the web
of the tall reeds
that line this end of the lake
one, learning to use
the long paddles
took on water as we
passed under the low bridge
that separates sections
permanent people named
big lac and little lac

now we relax on
the glass rimmed deck
of the good house
that watches over the little lac
blue, red, yellow, black shirts
primary colors, plus
all in a row
we read, paint, write
that good mix of
solitary pursuits, together

One of our friends from the beaver lodge on the little lake was enjoying an aspen tree snack a couple of nights ago and I happened to have a camera with me.

Annual outdoor music concert

All residents of Lac Le Jeune were invited to attend the private music festival tonight. Following the original notice about the concert there was a brief flurry of email from residents. Some individuals were opposed to the idea, citing possible violation of criminal code. Others stepped forward to add their vote of approval, emphasizing that live music in our community is not an everyday event and, furthermore, we were given plenty of notice. 

As of 9am today, the results of the public poll show support for the outdoor music concert, with 76% in favour or indifferent, and 22% opposed:

How do you feel about an annual, evening, outdoor music concert hosted at a LLJ residence?

• I like it 38 (57%)
• I don't like it 15 (22%)
• Doesn't matter to me 13 (19%)

Votes so far: 66

Unfortunately, it's impossible for everyone to be happy with the outcome. Nevertheless, it has been useful to openly discuss issues that are important to us in our community.

Late afternoon concert

If you happen to be out on the lake or wandering down Water Street Thursday, July 8 at 4:30pm, stop to listen to Patchestra, an eight-piece string quartet that will be playing on Hugh and Pat Burton's deck for a private party. What a relaxing way to spend the afternoon!

Bears in the neighbourhood

There have been several reports of bears around Lac Le Jeune this month. Lee and Kim Harvey were lucky enough to get this photo of a bear in their yard around 5:30 p.m. on the 17th trying to get at their empty bird feeders. When he left he ran down the street and across the bridge, and sure spooked a lot of other wildlife along the way!

Swamp Ladies

On this July day Hugh Burton conveniently had a camera with a good zoom lens while walking Rosie up the hill at Lac Le Jeune Park Drive West. He took a series of pictures of the "swamp ladies" finding their way through the maze toward the ranch at the end of the little lake. In case anyone is curious about the end of the story, we did find our way out! Thanks to Hugh for the photos and also for a new fitting name for a LLJ ladies' kayaking group!

Lac Le Jeune Store

The store is open for the summer! Linda and Walter have stocked the shelves and freezer with the usual necessities like chips, ice, and popsicles. :-) They can try to carry other items that we tend to run out of in our homes, like milk and bread, but only if we buy them! Also, boat rentals are available and Walter can offer some tips on fishing.

The store hours are 10 - 5:30, with a 12 - 1:00 lunch break.   

NOT the Vancouver Marathon

On Canada Day (July 1) we're walking to Duffy's Pub!

This idea started with a brochure I spotted while waiting in a line up at the bank back in February. The Vancouver Marathon was featuring a nordic walking category. It sounded like fun, and for sure my only hope of ever doing a marathon is to walk, not run.

So the planning began. I drafted up a training schedule and shared it with Lucy Lindros, the only friend who didn't stare blankly at the mention of driving all the way to Vancouver to walk 42 kilometres. We realized from the schedule that we needed to get started right away. Oh and that one day every weekend would be used up by a BIG l o n g walk. Plus we might have to give up some other fun stuff because you can only fit so many things into one day and well, we'd be walking a lot. Then the trip to Vancouver. Well, we'd need to spend a couple nights in a hotel, preferably close to downtown. And we'd better book right away!

A few things came up that first week of training. Instead of one day off we took 7. Hey, we're busy people. Nothing wrong with starting the following week, I say. We'll still make it! But geez sometimes the weather isn't very good in February. Maybe we should start in March?

I think the real turning point in our plan was when we talked about how aimless it seems to be walking all day just for the sake of going the distance. That's it! We need a destination! And something less complicated....no traveling, no big training programme, no big expenses. Let's do something local, we thought. So let's see, what would be a good destination?

A pub, of course! Please join us!

Ready for summer at the Lac?

Greetings!

Sylvia has asked me to contribute to the Lac le Jeune blog and I don't even live there . . . yet.  Let me introduce myself.  I'm Sylvia's sister, Jenny.  My husband Jeff and I will soon  be residents at the Lac and we can't wait.  We have visited many times and think it's a beautiful place.  About this time of year I'm sure everyone  is looking forward to warmer weather, so I thought I'd include a couple of summer photos I took during one of my visits.
