Bear Alert!

There have been several reports of a large black bear passing through the neighbourhoods, and in some cases getting into compost and garbage.

Chris Michell from Water Street sent along this photo -- seems the bear did quite a number on their compost bin! And don't worry, the bear was gone by the time the toddler appeared :-D

Kecia Turunen also reported that a large bear was hanging around the upper subdivision, and word has it there's also a smaller bear making the rounds.

Bottom line, watch out for bears! Make noise and get into the habit of scanning the area when outside. Bears are most active around dawn and dusk.

Bears passing through is expected, but here are some tips to ensure they keep moving to more natural food sources:

1. Keep garbage inside (and pet food, etc)
2. Maintain compost bins. Avoid adding cooked foods, bread, fruit, and cereal. It's also good practice to sprinkle regularly with garden lime to speed up the composting process and to reduce odour. 
3. Put away the bird feeders

Press Release: Door To Door Sales People

The Logan Lake RCMP Detachment has received a complaint of aggressive door-to-door sales of a water softener system. Reportedly the salesperson uses high-pressure sales tactics to sell the system which may not be required by the homeowner at a price much higher than market value. The person may be using chemicals to cause normal minerals dissolved in the water to react, become visible and float to the surface. It is completely normal to have minerals in tap water. Also the person may be implying that sodium in water impacts blood pressure, there are concerns about contaminated drinking water, and so on.

 

RCMP would like to remind the public to treat strangers selling items with caution. Be sure and ask for identification. If you feel at all suspicious or pressured, turn them away. If you are interested in what is being sold, it is always a good practice to contact a few local, reputable companies for a second opinion before making any purchase and obtain some estimates. You may find that the service is not recommended or required, or that you can obtain the same service for a better price.

 

Canada has some of the finest drinking water in the world. While there have been extremely rare and isolated incidents of water-borne illness in Canada, a water softener does not purify your water.

 

The water in Logan Lake is not treated as it naturally meets the Canadian Drinking Water Standards; and the Department of Health in Kamloops tests the water on a weekly basis.

Midnight the cat needs a home

Looking for a good home for our cat. We need to find a good home for our cat, Midnight, due to a member of our family with a severe allergy towards her. She is two and a half years old. She was adopted from the SPCA when she was a kitten. She is pretty independent. She likes to go outside but also likes to be indoors. She is a really good mouser and bug catcher. Our house is bug free and rodent free. We would love to see her go to someone on an acreage as she has lived out in the country all of her life. She is used to dogs as we have a Golden Lab that she tolerates.

Stolen sign

Our house sign was stolen from the top of our driveway sometime after the snow melted around the beginning of April. We would really like to have it returned. This was very upsetting to us as nothing like this has happened to us in the 11 yrs that we have been living here! Hello bears!

Have you spotted this small bear between the mailboxes and Stake Lake? He's been out and about near the road most days. 

This is a good time to remind everyone to be bear aware. It's time to put away the bird feeders, and be extra very careful with garbage, pet food, compost and other attractants. Remember, even your trash and compost containers are "bear proof", if you see bears around your property that means you're attracting them. For the safety of everyone in the community, please be careful.

Open fire prohibition set for Kamloops Fire Centre

News release from the Wildfire Management Branch. Open fire prohibition set for Kamloops Fire Centre

Effective at noon on May 15, 2014, the size of open fires will be restricted in most of the Kamloops Fire Centre to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect the public. Since April 1, Kamloops Fire Centre crews have responded to 38 wildfire incidents covering more than 438 hectares. Many of these wildfires resulted from poorly planned open burning. This prohibition applies to all areas of the Kamloops Fire Centre except the Clearwater Fire Zone and the Salmon Arm Fire Zone. Anyone conducting Category 2 or 3 fires outside of those two zones must extinguish any such fires by noon on May 15. This prohibition will remain in effect until Oct. 15, 2014, or until further notice. A map of the affected areas is available here. The Clearwater Fire Zone and the Salmon Arm Fire Zone will become subject to this prohibition on June 15, 2014, when all open burning will be prohibited throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre. Specifically, prohibited activities include: - the burning of any waste, slash or other materials (piled or unpiled) larger than one-half metre by one-half metre - the burning of more than two open fires of any size at the same time - stubble or grass fires of any size over any area - the use of fireworks, sky lanterns or burning barrels of any size or description This prohibition does not ban campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide (or smaller) and does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes. This prohibition covers all B.C. parks, Crown lands and private lands, but it does not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has forest fire prevention bylaws in place and is serviced by a fire department. Before lighting any fire, residents should check with local civic authorities regarding any current prohibitions. The Kamloops Fire Centre stretches from the northern border of Wells Gray Park to the U.S. border to the south, and from the Bridge River Glacier west of Gold Bridge to the Monashee Mountains east of Lumby. • Put up posters on the community bulletin boards, and other appropriate locations
• Each street that is participating should have a sign at the end of the street. Balloons help, too!
• Anything else?
