TNRL Partners with Take Action on Radon to Offer Free Home Test Kits

News Release

Kamloops, BC – October 19, 2026 – Thompson-Nicola Regional Library (TNRL) is partnering

with Take Action on Radon to help local residents learn about radon and test their homes this

winter through the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge.

The program includes a free online information session and a free long-term radon test kit, giving

participants the opportunity to learn about the health risks associated with radon and monitor

radon levels in their homes over a 100-day period.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas released from the breakdown of uranium in soil

and rock. It is odourless, colourless, and tasteless, and can enter homes through foundation

cracks and other openings. Long-term exposure to elevated radon levels is a leading cause of

lung cancer among non-smokers.

Residents interested in participating must register in advance. Participants will attend a free

online information session on October 28, 2026, at 7:00 pm, hosted by Take Action on Radon.

Participants will learn about radon, its health effects, and recommendations for testing and

mitigation.

Following the session, participants will be able to pick up their free radon test kits from North

Kamloops Library between October 29 and November 6, 2026.

"One of the things libraries do best is connect people with helpful resources,” said Allison

Knights, Branch Head of the North Kamloops Library. “We're glad to help bring this opportunity

to our communities and connect residents with information they can trust.”

The 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge differs from TNRL's existing radon detector lending program.

While TNRL continues to offer radon detectors through its lending collection for short-term

borrowing, this initiative provides participants with a 100-day home test kit, educational

resources, and direct support from radon experts throughout the testing process.

"We still see many Canadians delaying radon testing despite growing awareness of the risks,"

said Pam Warkentin, Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and

Technologists (CARST) and Project Manager for Take Action on Radon. "Programs like the 100

Radon Test Kit Challenge help communities take action to better understand and reduce radon

exposure in their homes."

A limited number of test kits are available, and advance registration is required. Register:  https://form.jotform.com/262375713174257
